31.x.1 {Oh! Weapons are inauspicious instruments.}
31.x.2 {(And) things (may) dislike them.}
31.x.3 {So a man with Tao does not dwell (on them).}
31.1 In domestic affairs, the gentleman honors the left.
In military affairs, then honors the right.
31.1.1 (There is an) ancient saying that weapons are inauspicious instruments.
31.1.x {(and are) not instruments for the gentleman.}
31.1.2 (Only) when unavoidable, then uses it.
31.1.3 (And) sharp raiding is preferable.
31.2.1 Do not be showily.
31.2.2 To be showily,
is to enjoy killing.
31.2.3 If enjoy killing,
then cannot gain recognition from the world.
31.3.1 (In) auspicious occasions, honors the left,
(but) in funeral affairs, honors the right.
31.3.2 This is why the assistant general stays in the left,
(and) the chief general stays on the right.
(This is to) say treat it as funerary rites.
31.3.3 So (for) manslaughter of many,
mourn and weep with grief.
(For) victory,
treat it as funerary rites.
