Those in the past that have attained
One: |
| 39.1.1 |
The sky attained One to be clear. The earth
attained One to be tranquil. |
| 39.1.2 |
The soul attained One to be
spiritual. The streams attained One to be filled
(full). |
| 39.1.3 |
The kings and lords attained One to be the
chiefs of the world. |
| 39.2 |
Their causing this (is
because): |
| 39.2.1 |
(If) the sky is not clear, (it) will perhaps
crack. (If) the earth is not tranquil, (it) will perhaps
quake. |
| 39.2.2 |
(If) the soul is not spiritual, (it) will
perhaps (be) exhausted. (If) the streams are not filled (full),
(they) will perhaps dry up. |
| 39.2.3 |
(If) the kings and lords are not noble and
lofty, (they) will perhaps tumble and fall (from their
position). |
| 39.3.1 |

nobility must has ignobility as its fundamental. High must have
low as its base. |
| 39.3.2 |
This is why the kings and lords call themselves
the lonesome, the solitary (and) the unworthy. |
|
This is taking ignobility as the fundamental!
Isn't it? |
| 39.3.3 |
So
(whether) to have many carriages (or) no carriage. |
|
Do
not desire (to be) green with luster as (precious) jade, (nor)
hard like a (big) rock. |
