39.1 Those in the past that have attained One:
39.1.1 The sky attained One to be clear.
The earth attained One to be tranquil.
39.1.2 The soul attained One to be spiritual.
The streams attained One to be filled (full).
39.1.3 The kings and lords attained One to be the chiefs of the world.
39.2 Their causing this (is because):
39.2.1 (If) the sky is not clear, (it) will perhaps crack.
(If) the earth is not tranquil, (it) will perhaps quake.
39.2.2 (If) the soul is not spiritual, (it) will perhaps (be) exhausted.
(If) the streams are not filled (full), (they) will perhaps dry up.
39.2.3 (If) the kings and lords are not noble and lofty, (they) will perhaps tumble and fall (from their position).
39.3.1 So nobility must has ignobility as its fundamental.
High must have low as its base.
39.3.2 This is why the kings and lords call themselves the lonesome, the solitary (and) the unworthy.
This is taking ignobility as the fundamental! Isn't it?
39.3.3 So (whether) to have many carriages (or) no carriage.
Do not desire (to be) green with luster as (precious) jade,
(nor) hard like a (big) rock.
