Freddie Delighted with Last 12 Months

WITH the year coming to an end, Arsenal's Fredrik Ljungberg admits that he has had a fantastic 12 months.

The Swede played an integral part in The Gunners double triumph and scored in the FA Cup final.

He went to the World Cup finals, but injury curtailed his performances in the Far East and meant his missed the start of the new Premiership season.

Despite his recent troubles, Ljungberg still feels his last year has been great.

"Right after the New Year, I got an injury and was out for eight weeks and it was quite tough, then I came back and it went well," he said.

"I was fortunate enough to get to score some goals and that it always giving attention.

"Most of all, it has gone well for the entire side, we won both the league and the Cup."

Ljungberg admitted that winning the double was special as it was his first taste of glory.

"It was a fantastic feeling since I had never won anything before," he explained.

"We had finished runners-up in both the league and the FA Cup over the last few years."

The Swedish star feels that he is always improving and that showed in his displays last season.

"I have probably improved every year, I have been here quite a long time now and have some experience.

"It was the same last year. But it is better others get judged as well."

Ljungberg remembered some of the highlights of the year.

"Firstly, when we won the FA Cup, then the Wednesday afterwards we won the league up in Manchester," he recalled.

"Then, the Saturday thereafter we received the Premier League trophy. That's the three.

"But I must add when I was elected the best player in the league by the sponsors Barclaycard, there were many managers who got to vote and I think Svennis (Sven Goran Eriksson) was also involved. That was tremendously special."

The Arsenal star then looked at the new season and thinks The Gunners are looking good again.

"We are top of the league and heading our Champions League group in the second phase, so we shouldn't complain," he opined.

"And if you look at the leagues, it looks good again.

"We have played all London derbies away and they are usually tough fixtures and now they are done, it feels good and so we hope for a good spring.

"We don't want to be cocky or anything, but since Arsenal won the double last season, we want to defend it and we feel we did far too poorly in the Champions League last season and we have the goal to even win that now."

Ljungberg is again struggling with a few minor injuries, but he blames that on the amount of games being played in England.

"There have been so many matches now, so you do feel it," he said.

"You try to rehabilitate between the matches to be able to cope with playing.

"I have got some blows on both feet and such things. But the hip is okay, and staff shall always able to put me together."

Ljungberg has also been named Swedish sports Personality of the Year, which he was delighted with.

"It's a big honour," he said.

"There are so many skilled sports men and women in Sweden, so it means a lot to me to be awarded as the sports star of the year.

"I just try to do as well as I can, be myself. If it's appreciated, it's just fun for me." 1
