Freddie Plays Down Party Incident

ARSENAL midfielder Freddie Ljungberg has attempted to play down the media frenzy in his native Sweden over his decision to go to a party until late on Saturday night.

The 24-year-old is back in his native Scandinavia with the Swedish squad ahead of a Euro 2004 qualifier against Hungary on Wednesday.

However, Ljungberg insists his decision to go out with friends will not hamper his preparations for the clash.

"I had not been in Sweden for a while and went out with my friends. It was neither late nor something wet. I had two free days and was out during my free time," stated the Highbury idol.

Ljungberg did not tell Swedish manager Tommy Soderberg about his excursion which caused some embarrassment when it was raised at a press conference.

But the Gunner claims the incident has now been cleared with his national team boss.

"Tommy and the others had not talked to me, so they might have been a bit unsure, at the news conference.

"They might not have known what to answer. Now, they have been informed.

"I am a professional footballer and know how I shall prepare myself ahead of important matches. Then, you need to be able to relax and be with friends."

Ljungberg looks set to play in the Hungary game, but admits he is still being troubled by a long-standing Achilles injury.

"It should be possible to play, but alot of treatment is required to make it work.

"I still got some problems. I can play, but after the matches, I got some pains and even in the beginning before I get really warm.

"But I will try to keep going these last two months, then I will hopefully get to rest for some weeks." 1
