Matrices 44, Old Navy 32

Revamped Matrices took Game 1 with ease

The Matrices seem to have made the right off-season choices.

New members Wong Ching Hei, Daniel Chan, and Kong combined for 32 rebounds as they beat the Old Navy 44:32. Kong barely missed a double-double with 8 points and 10 rebounds off the bench while new starters Daniel and Wong Ching Hei had 12 and 10 rebounds respectively.

The addition of these new players also rejuvenated Gabriel Kwong, who scored 15 points in this game after averaging only 3.83 points last season. Gabriel made 6 of 11 shots and 3 of 5 from the line along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

"I was just being aggressive out there. Seeing these new guys, I felt like I had the responsibility to step up my game and show them what this team is about." Gabriel commented.

Another revitalized player was Justin Wong who had a poor performance last season with a pathetic 0.67 points per game. Justin turned things around in this game and scored 9 points and dished out 2 assists.

"Last year was a nightmare to me!" Justin exclaimed. "It seems like I have finally got my shooting touch back this year. Thanks to my new contact lenses."

The Matrices led throughout the game enroute to an easy win. Justin hit a pair of jumpers early in the game to put them ahead 4:2 and never looked back.

The score was held at 4:2 for several minutes before Gabriel hitting a long jumper from the corner off an inbound pass from Anthony, who had a cold shooting night making only 1 out of 7. The Matrices then reeled off 6 straight points and ended the first quarter at 12:2.

The Old Navy fought back in the second quarter with a couple of long distance shots. Coach Tung then threw in newly acquired Kong, who ignited the team with his power and quickness. The score was 21:13 at half time.

In the third quarter, the Matrices completely dominated the game with tough defense and fastbreaks. Gabriel scored on a tough lay-up which put the Matrices ahead 37:15, their biggest lead in the game.

Things were a little rough for the Matrices in the fourth quarter as turnovers plagued the team and Gabriel sprained his ankle by stepping on other's foot. The Old Navy pulled within 13 points at 37:24 after Kong throwing a bad pass to Anson which resulted in a turnover. Kong had 6 turnovers in the game. Missing a couple of easy shots, the Matrices found its lead cut to 39:27. They finally responded with a tip-in by Daniel and a feed from Justin to Kong for an easy lay-up. The Old Navy then connected several in a row but it was too little too late as the Matrices won it 44:32.

Coach Tung felt pretty happy about his new players, ' this team is so different from last year's. The new players showed a tremendous amount of upsides and provided us with energy and rebounding skills. I think we have a promising season ahead of us.'
