Matrices 47, Unicorn 36

Matrices, rebounded from back-to-back losses.

Gabriel Kwong and the Matrices really kept their promises.

After the horrible game 5 loss, Gabriel promised that they would take game 6 for sure and they did as they beat Unicorn, 47:36. Gabriel, Justin, and Kenneth each scored 12 points.

"This shows that we have many scoring options, " Gabriel said. " We shared the ball well on court and didn't focus on a single player. Justin and I were finding the open guys on the court and hit them with passes."

Gabriel had a career high 7 assists together with 4 steals. Justin also had 3 assists and a career high 7 rebounds.

"I didn't know but the ball seemed to be dropping onto my hand," Justin said of his unusually high rebound numbers.

The Matrices did well on the defensive end as well. Wong Ching Hei and Senne Sung each had 2 blocks and one of Senne's block was a clean grab in the air. The Matrices also had 7 steals.

The game was very close in the first half. Unicorn started the game with a three pointer and a basket in the paint to put them ahead 0:5. The Matrices responded with a layup by Kenneth and a jumper by Justin to make it 4:5. Unicorn added another long range jumper to widen the lead to 4:7. Gabriel then fed Kenneth for a baseline jumper and hit a turnaround jumper to give the Matrices their first lead, 8:7. Unicorn ended the quarter with two free throws with the score at 8:9.

Both teams were exchanging leads in the second quarter. Gabriel made a layup off an inbound pass from Justin to take the lead, 10:9. Unicorn got back the lead with a banker off the right wing. Anson Ho, who was scoreless in the first 5 games, scored in the paint off a pass from Gabriel to take the lead at 12:11.

"I have to give credit to Gabriel. It was a good pass. But I also have to give credit to myself as I was standing at the right place at the right time," Anson said.

The lead was changed for several more possessions but the Matrices finally broke out halfway through the quarter. Gabriel drove in the lane for an uncontested layup. Justin made two free throws and a coast to coast layup to extend the lead to 6. The first half ended with the Matrices in front, 21:15.

The Matrices seemed to have regained their confidence heading into the second half as the reeled off 7 straight points early in the third quarter, featuring a short hook by Wong Ching Hei, a steal and fast break by Gabriel and Kenneth, and another steal and fastbreak by Gabriel. The lead was increased to 13 points (28:15), the largest in the game. However, Unicorn did not just give up. Fueling by careless passes and sloppy defense from the Matrices, Unicorn had 5 - 0 run to pull within 8 points. Justin snapped the run with a mid-range jumper to make it 30:20. Unicorn was able to take advantage of the team foul and scored several points near the end of the third quarter. The score was 33:23 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Matrices rougly maintained a double digit lead but failed to blow Unicorn away. Unicorn scored in the middle to cut the deficit back to single digit. Justin then assisted in two straight possessions, to Gabriel on a fastbreak and to Kong for a long jumper, to widen the lead back to double digit, 37:25. Everytime when it looked like the Matrices were going to build a commanding lead, Unicorn fought back and kept it close. Following a three pointer by Kenneth, which gave the Matrices a 12 point lead, Unicorn was able to draw offensive fouls from Gabriel and Justin, cutting the lead to 8 points at 33:41. Unfortunately for Unicorn, their chance of launching a comeback was over due to foul trouble. The Matrices scored the last 6 points from the line as Unicorn was over the team foul limit. They finally won the game 47:36.

"Our offense is much better now with everybody moving around more and we had fewer turnovers this game," Kenneth said. "Also, we played pretty good perimeter defense adopting the 3-2 zone."

"I really think the practices paid off. We were a lot smoother on offense and guys were getting more open looks, "Kenneth added.

Comparing to game 5, the Matrices improved in every category, especially field goal percentage and turnover (12.2% to 40% FG and 16 to 6 TOs). Also improved was the free throw percentage, in which they made 12 of 18 (66.67%).

"Tell you what," Gabriel said. "We shot a much higher free throw percentage because I didn't have any free throw at all."
