Holiday in Michigan from Alex LO (Back to Top)

My holiday has been gone! Life is....

We have to be happy all the time! try you best!

This summer, I had hard time with my friend Bruce who lives in Michigan. I left with anger to Bristol, Virginia. I made my first bus trip in the US. It was really a good experience for myself! I learned a lot in the trip! A new comer tried to be independent in the US!

After being in the small dumpy town, Bristol, for 3 months. I am tired of it! Studying is going well. But I am really sick of it! Everyday, I see the same people all the time. There are not much entertainment in Bristol at all. I cannot say I hate it, just I feel I am in country. I had been away from city life for three months! I had hard time in school.

This week, I did have good time! All my troubles seem far away from me. Time goes too quick! A week has gone! I am going back to Bristol again! I am sure I will miss city life and Chinese food. I do miss home!

I came to Michigan on Sunday night. I rode with Coach Dewitt. Bruce took me in Indiana. We were supposed to meet in a Ramada Hotel. However when we were there, the hotel has been gone. However I met my friend. I had not met him for 3 months. For the last three months , I did not contact home much, as I was till mad on him what he did to me in summer. We had a three and half hour drive to Livonia, Michigan. I was back to a HOUSE again. I had lived in dormitory for three months. I had my own room. I could cook again. I felt like home. I miss home! The time we arrived at the house was 12:30am.

He had to work on the first three days (21 to 23 Nov) , so I spent most of my time on my assignment, English research papers and scholarship essays. I enjoyed my holiday! I had good time being alone! I could do whatever I wanted to do! I was away from Bristol. I was so happy about it

I contacted most of my friends who I hadn’t talked for a while online. They were still doing good. I was so happy that I got the chance to catch up with them. I talked to Phyllis, Florence, Ah So, Benson, Kosala, Chirag…I missed talking to them. I did miss meeting my friends.

I saw snow at last in my life! It was cold outside, but I didn’t feel cold at all as there was heat inside. I ran in the snow! It was cold, but it was enjoyable. My shoes got wet! I told myself I had to learn how to get rid of it! Everywhere was covered by white! It was pretty! However I didn’t play with the snow much. At least I didn’t make a snowman. I made some balls and threw them onto the ground! I am too old for making a snowman!

On Thanksgiving Day, I went to Detroit City for a race which was only 1 mile (1600 meters). It was very cold! Bruce told me with the wind, it would be like 0° F (-18° C). I warmed up inside the Cobo Center. There were many runners gathered in the center . I felt like I was in a city again. I missed this feeling for ages! I felt like I am in Hong Kong. I went out for my 1 mile run. It was really cold and the ground was icy! It was a bit hard to run on the snow! I finished my race with 7:16 minutes. It was not a good time! I could do better than that. Well, as the first time to race on snow, so I told myself the time was acceptable.

After that, we went back to the house to rest. I only had few hours sleep last night as I was too excited about the holiday. I took a nap till 1:30pm. We were supposed to have Thanksgiving dinner at his mom, Pat‘s house. I got dressed up and we left the house at 2pm.

The time we arrived at the house, Pat and Daniel, Bruce’s daughter who is 22 years old, were preparing for the dinner. We had turkey, shrimps, mashed tomato with gravy, stuffing (this, cornbread, corns and some more stuff, is supposed to put inside the turkey and cook. It‘s like Beijian stuffed ducks. ), chocolate pie, pumpkin pie, salad, green beans and cooked mixed vegetable. It was a big meal. After the meal my stomach was upset! I did not have big meal and meat for a long time. My stomach cramped.

The dinner was over around 3pm. Then three females and a man sat on the table started talking. We talked about the politics, the stability in Livonia, the kidnapping cases, Hollywood stars….I did had good time. However my stomach did not! I had upset stomach till 10pm after taking 4 types of medicine! Well, it was happy time! I ate too much what I should deserve! God! We left around 7pm. It was my first Thanksgiving dinner!

After that we decided to go to the Christmas lighting in Hines Park. Daniel, Bruce and I sat on the car driving through the park seeing different Christmas light decoration. I went out the car to take photos. God! I stayed outside for not longer than 30 seconds my hands were frizzing! It was very cold that night!

Around 8, we were back to the house. Bruce’s friend, Michael came over to visit. He is 28 years old , tall and a bit chubby! Honestly, he is not handsome. Surely he is not my cup of tea! However we had good time. There were some music channels. We talked about different kinds of music for almost half an hour! He left around 11pm. What a busy day it was!

Only two more days left!

I gave him the present I bought for him. It was a tie with strips. Well, I wanted to be nice to him as he invited me to come over. He said he would buy my something for Christmas.

On Friday, another busy day, we went to shopping malls, sports wear shops. I was looking for a present as he said. He wanted me to pick up what I wanted. I didn’t want him to spend too much on me as I am just a friend of him not a girlfriend. Well, I don’t know to be his girlfriend. To be friend is enough! Gosh! Think! His daughter is same age as me! 22 year old! How old is he? Use your own brain!

I was thinking to pick up a roller-skating shoes, but I remember Bristol is hilly, how can I roller skate? He was looking for some sports pants. He got his. When I saw a set of Michigan hat and t-shirt. I asked if I could get it as a gift to remind me that I had been to Michigan. He said yes. That was the first present he got for me since July.

Then we went to the malls. The interior design is similar like those malls in HK! I felt I was alive again! As it was the day after Thanksgiving, lots of people went out for shopping for Christmas, there were quiet a number of people! Oh! I felt I was back to some shopping center in HK again! I hadn’t been to any shopping mall for four months! I did miss it! I didn’t buy anything as it is too expensive! Well, think of that when you go to Festival Walk, would you buy anything? Also, I was lack of capital! I saw lots of fancy stuff that I used to window shopping in HK! I felt satisfied as least I could feel it!

I got my first pair of boots in the US. I hadn’t spent a lot for a long time (Don’t worry, I didn’t pay for the boots. It was Bruce!) They were my present! I missed shopping. I got a pair of new shoes at last. I was so happy about it! For the last three months, I didn’t buy any shoes or clothes. Everyday I wore the same stuff I brought with me from HK. He bought me a water prove spray too., in case it would snow in Bristol.

It was dinner time around 6pm. Pat, Bruce and I went to Richard, a restaurant for dinner. I hadn’t out for dinner for ages! The last time I went to out for food was with my friend, David. I wanted to thank him being so nice to me on campus! I had salmon with salad. It was good food. I had good time too. Another happy day was gone. After the dinner, I went to the pool to swim for half an hour. I really had to exercise as I ate too much! Tonight, I had upset stomach again! Too much food! God!

Bruce took me to a vacuumed car park to learn driving! That was the second time I drove! I really have to learn driving!

Saturday, the last day before I left Michigan. As Bruce knew I had stomach problem. He bought me two bottles of medicine. He is being caring. On the way back home, around 6pm, I told him that I was glad we were friends still after being misunderstood in summer. I thought I would never come over again as we both were mad on each other. We had bad time! Now I felt we both grew up after three months. Life is a process of changing! We all have to improve ourselves, spiritually and intellectually.

I hadn’t cooked Chinese food for a long time. I cooked a Chinese dinner for Pat, Bruce and Michael. I cooked beef with onion, chilly bean curbs, noodles with wonton and baichai with sea weed for appetizer. We had sesame seed dumplings for deserve. I hadn’t cooked for 3 months. I missed cooking! I hadn’t had Chinese food for 3 months. I missed it! I miss all Chinese food!

After that we played card games, poker (a American common card game, usually for gambling). I lost 31 coins! A big loser! I know I am not good at gambling! A night had been gone!

I am going back to Bristol tomorrow! I am going back to my studying and training.

I miss the livening in city though I could enjoy the lovely sceneries in Bristol. Life problems will be back to my life!

I am so glad that I had a week of from school. Now I know why people need to take holidays!

Life is not easy here, but I know I would overcome it!

I may come back to Michigan again as I do feel this is a home for me in the US.

Life in America form ALEX LO (Back to Top)
Date: Mon, 21 Nov 2005

Hm....yes I am in a very good team I never had before! For the past three months in school, all the teammates worked very hard in training and we did supported each other very well! Sometimes I do feel the school is just a concentration camp for us! like those
athletes in china!
everyday we have two sections training, except Sundays. We know the week programme on Monday. Sometims the training is quiet harsh, like 12*400 or 3Mile predetor run. But when now look back, they are nothing at all! And my health condition does improve a lot! except i always catch a cold or flu in campus...there are too many international students, so too may germs from difference areas!
about study....i am pretty well though! Sometimes I do get As in class. Sometimes I am lazy some get B or C in tests. But comparing with the work in HK, they seems to be easy for me. As the school is pretty small, most of my classes do not have students over 15. So I get quiet close with the professors. I enjoy the political science (Mr Reviello) and world history (Mr. Smith) a lot! Even though they are not a Phd holdes, but they inspire me to think about life...I've learned a lot in the last three months! Besides, I have read endless books I had never read in my life! I am going to take State and Local Government, Comtep. Terroism, Drink & Beverage, History next semmester! Just cant wait for it!
I am going to have 3 week off for christmas, I am just thinking where i should go! I talked to a manager in a chinese restuarant. I may work there during Xmas. I hope so! Cos that can help a lot! I need money for next semester!
Bill, I am so happy that i came to the US and you guys (Lee Chai, hui Gao esp!!) still give me a BIG support! Sure, some nights I did have hard time missing home a lot! Crying a lot! but now it seems things are going better in life! I hope everything would be better!
Thanks for your guys support! Let's train hard and let's have fun!
We have dreams: do a good job in 2009 east Asian Games! I will come back for sure! Cant wait and come back to train with you guys!
Alex
PS if you want, you can forward this email to other SHTB teammates!

Virginia Intermont College Racewalkers Debut in Kingsport with Fast Times- Matthew De Witt (Back to Top)

-       Alex Lo breaks Hongg Kong Amateur Athletic Association 5km record
(Saturday, October 8, 2005, Kingsport, Tennessee) - Saturday morning, the
three Virginia Intermont College freshmen racewalkers, plus assistant coach
Matt De Witt, competed in the 2005 USA Track and Field 5 Kilometer Racewalk
Championships. Competing in their first and only racewalk event of the fall
season, the Cobra walkers proved their fitness, and showed much potential
for the 2006 track season.

-       Leading the Cobras was Amanda Gorst (Hawkes Bay, New Zealand).
Walking a perfect race, her time of 24:49 put her in 2nd place overall.
Following Amanda to the finish was Alex Lo (Wong Tai Sin, Hong Kong) in 3rd
place, with a time of 26:31. Her time of 26:31 broke her own Hong Kong
Amateur Athletic Association 5km record. Her old record was 29:45.40, set
this past June. Finishing 8th place overall and the 6th place among the
American competitors, was Raven Pilgrim (Brooklyn, New York) with a time of
29:23. One thing to note is that Amanda and Alex raced the event as an
exhibition, since they are not U.S. citizens.

The overall winner of the women's race was Jolene Moore, of Northbrook,
Illinois, in a time of 23:59.

In the men's race, VIC assistant coach Matthew De Witt finished in 2nd place
overall, with a time of 23:21. The overall winner was Ray Sharp, of Atlantic
Mine, Michigan.

The VIC racewalkers will now focus back onto the remainder of the
cross-country season. The next event on the schedule is the Southeastern
Classic, Saturday, October 23rd, in Mount Berry, Georgia.

The 3rd Malaysia International 24 hour walk. (Back to Top)

Dear Friends,

Report on the 3rd Malaysia International 24 hour walk.

The third Malaysia International 24 Hours Walk is no ordinary event as it
is not something that not everyone can sign up for.
Due to the demands the event places on the physical as well as mental
aspects of the participants, the Malaysian Race Walking Association
(PLJKM) scrutinizes the entries before giving the nod to the participant.
And come September 18, some 350 participants from 15 countries will try to
overcome both mental and physical barriers as they try to achieve the feat
of becoming a centurion, which is to break the 100-mile barrier within 24
 hours.
The event that will be held at Genting Highlands will see the return of
defending champions Jose Mora Bernardo of Spain and Irina Putinseva who
won the men's and women's events respectively in 2003 at the same venue.
"It is a race against the clock and both the participants as well as
spectators are in for a treat as the endurance factor will be pivotal in a
race of this kind," said PLJKM president Datuk Peter Chin during a press
launch of the event at Wisma OCM on Tuesday.
"A special 800 metre track will be laid out and walking around the clock
will no doubt put a tremendous physical strain.
"The participants are allowed to rest, eat food and even take a nap during
the walk. But they will lose valuable time if the stops are too frequent."
No Malaysian has broken into the centurion club and the closest
participant that came to it was Effendy Suhaili from the Armed Forces who
clocked a distance of 155.70km in the event in 2003.
Most of the participants who want to achieve the century mark often do it
 with a minimum of breaks.
The breaks generally last only for a couple of minutes to change shoes or
have a quick rubdown or just sit down for a drink for a little bit.
And as the participants move towards the later stages of the event, some
 are just physically wrecked.
Thus it is best to keep the stops short and keep on the move as the
participants endure the pain to achieve a milestone.
"But this is more of a mind over matter event as the participants need to
overcome the pain barrier at times," said Datuk Peter.
"The climate at Genting Highlands suits the foreign and local participants
well and we are fortunate that sponsor's have been supporting this event
well ever since it was first held in 2001."

 What Is Race Walking

Race Walking began as an ultra-long distance sport in the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries and still maintains a great following in Europe.
Easily the most famous event in the world was the Paris to Strasbourg walk
(320 mile 3 day event) which has now become the Paris to Colmar (close to
 Strasbourg).
This event is over a distance of 520km and is generally won in around the
 60-hour mark.
Other events are the Roubiax (France) 28-hour walk in which many European
countries enter teams, the Lugano (Italy) 100 km and the
 London-to-Brighton (53 mile) event.
On top of this, most countries have an active Centurion Club, which offers
life-long membership for all sub-24 hour 100-mile finishers.

My painfull experience in 3rd Genting 24hrs walk - Mr. EngTiong Tey  ( Malaysia) Date:18-19/9/05

Time:12noon to 12noon

Place:Genting

As u all know, I am still suffer on leave after 4 days of Genting 24hrs walk, honestly let u all know that I cried after cross the finishing line,my all body over tire,I can't control my emotional, cried infront of ST couple. Then u all shouldn't call me ironman(orang besi) liao, so dam suffer...I almost gave up....during the race at 6 hours cover only 33km !

I hope my kan koh(suffer) condition will not scare u all interest to join this such endurance walk race in future.

Penguin 2 drive me from my section 17 no:737 house after I came back from support running friends in PJ Half, like PM gang,Safra and other PACM gang.

Due to short of time, we rush to reporting and get ready all of our equipment, lucky we still have about 25 minutes to snap some foto of pre race, but I skip lunch...hahaha....this is no good....advise who interest in future, may need to reach there more early...cause skip lunch is not good oh, less energy...!

Chat with a lot of PACM members, toke a group foto b4 the race start, I use my NB 900, adidas long sleeve (thanks jamie's tip), pacm cap, climbathon mask and also my pouch which I put DC .

The race start at 12.00noon,I with 300plus walkers, very excited to start this endurance walk race...as I no target and walk relax, no rush. But for elite walkers, they are dam fast, very fast to one lap by lap overtoke us.

As first.. I plan to use my adidas watch to record down every 2 laps timing, cause my watch only have 100 laps, but this is useless.. cause once u continous walk lap by lap...u will not easy to remember, I realise after 9 hours... organiser release every 3 hours results...hahaha.. I use my DC to snap down, easy and fast....convenient, just paid in full concetration walk.

The distance of one lap is about 875.4metre,the most tough part is about 80 metre downhill part, some walkers floating, then their lap results will disqualified.

My tactic is walk relax ,have fun and avoid go to toilet, don't want buy 4 digit(toilet), my first 3 hours results is 17.50km,very relax pace and snap some photos, hat with friends.

Altough I skip lunch, but I no dare to have a lot food at supply station, only ate some bread, biscuit and some light food, then I just tahan (maintain) until dinner time at 8pm,only ate some rice.

I manage to keep all the way with my hungry stomach, even when I cross finishing line, I still manage to control of the hungry feeling, drink a lot of sport drink, plus milo and lime/lemon, plus final 3 hours BANANA favour powerbar...it help me a lot, I manage to all out at final hour, just avoid ate a lot of food during the race.

I have one disappointed experience when I felt one of my left foot toe black colour liao at about 7pm,so change with sandal, but I forgot to put back my championchip... hahaha... lost about 40 minutes... but what to do ? I hv to accept it with sad feeling. But it affect much my feeling, especially I realise it was not easy endurance walk race, altough I am not aim for prize.. but for my first apperance, I don't know what will happen to me, make me so sad, altough on my way toke my championchip, a lot of friends ask.. I also sad to reply...my heart really broken..!!

At midinight, my mileage 58km..P2 said his foot suffer.. got serious blister liao... he will sleep from 12am....I no plan to sleep..just usewhat I have ,even my pace per hour is so little about 3km plus,I just keep away from sleeping...hahaha... not easy oh....some more hungry.. cold weather and at about 5.30am n 6.30am raining...especially 6.30am is medium raining...many ppls have to wear raincoat to continue on, I praise all this walkers fighting spirit...!!

My mileage increase very slow, after 15 hours(3am),only70km,then at 18 hours(6am),my mileage just 83km overtoke p2 ,at21 hours(9am) ,my mileage surpass 96km,I overtoke some others good pacm members, that boost my spirit, Almost I hit the wall as early as 6hrs(6pm) and my muscle of the leg is dam sore ,I start attack and try to walk faster with all my energy and paid 100% full concetration at final hour.. my pace very encouraging 7km perhour....I  finished with 111.18km with use of 23:56:50... thanks.. my body suddenly felt allrelease, drink one can of sport drink, ST couple saw my face with crying...so paiseh... quickly hold on....chat them for a while thenq up for giving medals....!

Waiting for prize presentation, I q up for lunch, at half way, I felt can't tahan hungry and sleepy feeling...I think I will near to pengsan liao....quickly pass my plate to p2 ask him for help take meal, then I push away some ppls, qickly sit down outside of toilet,my face was white ,uncle Sonny quickly ask me what happen, I said I almost pengsan liao, dam cham, ask him to seek p2 help me quickly take food for me.. hahaha...scare oh....one fellow snap my kan koh face foto, apalah.. I quickly use my hand block my face...hahaha !

My body totally out of my control, tell u all, this hungry feeling still maintain even after one week, I toke a lot of food.. but my uncomfortable stomach....make me no mood.. lucky my boss approve gua 3 days annual leave plus two days offday, I rest 5 days at house....sipeh jia lat...I no dare to take part if no well prepare !

And even my sleeping feeling also kan koh... slept a lot after the race.. also difficult to recover...dam suffer ,cause sleeping is most important for us.

I am so lucky have a lot of friends to support me, especially million thanks to my close friend MP, Uncle Sonny, Safra friends (ST),P2,Goh who help me to tight up my championchip on sandal.. without u all help and enouragement, I sure gave up in early stage, I don't know how to appreciate u help and encourage...KAN EN...!!

My timing ,mileage and position:

3hrs ─20laps(17.50km)2:51:26
6hrs ─38laps(33.26km)5:45:21
9hrs ─53laps(46.36km)9:01:01,position 55.

2. (a) The appointed judges of Race Walking shall elect a Chief Judge, if one has not been appointed previously. In competitions held under Rule 1.1(a), (b), (c), (d), the Chief Judge has the power to disqualify an athlete, from the circuit to the stadium and inside the stadium when the race finishes in the stadium or in the last 100m when the race takes place solely on the track or on the road course, when his/her mode of progression obviously fails to comply with the paragraph 1 above regardless of his/her having received previous warnings.
(b) The Chief Judge shall act as the supervising official for the competition, and only act as a judge in the special situation noted in paragraph (a) above in competitions under IAAF Rule 1.1(a), (b), (c) and (d). In competitions held under IAAF Rule 1.1(a), (b) and (c), a maximum of two Chief Judge's Assistants may be appointed by the Local Organising Committee after consultation with the Chief Judge and the Technical Delegates. They are not entitled to a second caution from the same Judge for the same offence. Having cautioned an athlete, the Judge shall inform the Chief Judge of his action after the competition.

Warning and Disqualification (Back to Rules)
4. (a) Each Judge's proposal for disqualification is called a warning. Athletes shall be given warnings when, by their mode of progression, they fail to comply with paragraph 1 above by exhibiting visible loss of contact or a bent knee during any part of the competition.
(b) When an athlete receives a warning from three different Judges, the athlete is disqualified and he shall be notified of this disqualification by the Chief Judge or the Chief Judge’s Assistant.
(c) In all competitions, either directly controlled by the IAAF or taking place under IAAF permit, in no circumstances shall two Judges of the same nationality have the power to disqualify.
(d) If it is impractical to notify an athlete of the disqualification during the race, the disqualification shall be given as soon as practicable after the athlete has finished. The failure to give prompt notification shall not result in the reinstatement of a disqualified athlete.
(e) A yellow sign with the symbol of the offence on each side, shall be shown to the athlete, when a caution is given. A red sign symbolises the disqualification of the athlete. The red sign is used by the Chief Judge to inform athletes of their disqualification. Athletes may also be informed of their disqualification by the Chief Judge’s Assistant.
(f) In track races, an athlete who is disqualified shall immediately leave the track and, in road races, he shall, immediately after being disqualified, remove the distinguishing numbers which he is wearing and leave the course. Any disqualified athlete who fails to leave the course or track may be liable to further disciplinary action in accordance with IAAF Rules 22.1(f) and 145.
